Is lambing dangerous to pregnant women?
Depending on when you visit, we may have pregnant ewes and lambs. It is not advised that pregnant individuals visit the lambing area due to the risk of miscarriage. Expectant mothers who come into close contact with sheep during lambing may jeopardise their health as well as that of their unborn child, due to potential infections that can affect certain ewes.
These include chlamydiosis (enzootic abortion of ewes – EAE), toxoplasmosis and listeriosis.
Although reports of infections and human miscarriages linked to contact with sheep are quite rare, it is
crucial for pregnant women to be informed about the potential risks.
If you decide to visit, we advise against going to the lambing area.
