We know our scones here at Wroxham Barns – our chefs make more than 30,000 a year for The Pantry Coffee Shop and the Barn Restaurant and they’re as popular as ever with our visitors to enjoy with a cuppa or with our delicious Afternoon Tea served with fresh cream and sweet, fruity jam.
For the past 9 years we’ve been running an annual Scone Competition – as far as we know the only dedicated scone baking competition in the UK – and we have had many hundreds of entries over the years of all shapes and sizes and we’ll be doing it all over again in September 2016.
The 2015 competition introduced a new category to find a brand new scone recipe to take pride of place on the Wroxham Barns menu and was won by Jacqueline Collier with her Date & Walnut Scones which you can try for yourself in the Barn Restaurant and The Pantry Coffee Shop. Jacqueline won a VIP day out at Wroxham Barns for her family and a £200 donation to the charity of her choice from Wroxham Barns which she chose to send to Motor Neurone Disease Association who care, research and campaign for those affected by this life-changing disease that attacks the nerves in the brain and spinal cord.
The competition is open to all amateur bakers no matter how young – or old – you are and we do get plenty of men entering as well as the ladies. Bakers must bring along 4 scones in each category they wish to enter ready for judging by a panel of judges which in 2015 included members of the Women’s Institute who also gave a scone-baking masterclass to visitors. There is a £1 fee for bakers wishing to enter their scones with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Support.
Our competition is part of the Norfolk Food & Drink Festival which aims to encourage a better understanding of the importance of food and drink to Norfolk’s economy, environment, health and wellbeing, countryside and agriculture and your £1 entry fee goes to Macmillan Cancer Support. As far as we know, it’s the only dedicated scone baking competition in the UK so download your entry form hereand dig out your secret scone recipe ready to impress those lovely ladies from the Swallowtail WI and the Norwich Clandestine Cake Club who have once again agreed to help us out with the judging.

If you can email , post or drop in your entry form we would be really grateful…..but you can just come on the day with your form. We will start judging at 2.30pm and should be announcing the winners around 4pm. Ideally you need to provide two scones on a plate and wrapped in cling film, with a named label. In the freestyle category, please list the principle ingredients. In any event we will have a plentiful supply of paper plates, cling film and labels.
